It's Done.

Remember this post? well for the first time in my adult life I don’t have a penny to my name – like nothing, zilch, zero. This weekend I withdrew all my savings and paid off my parent’s mortgage. It was a big decision and one that took me a while to make, but in the end I know that I made the right decision and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I expected to feel a little better or more excited than what I do right now. Instead I feel a little scared and a little lost – where to now? All these years I’ve worked and worked, now I just want to let go and enjoy but my nest egg isn’t there and I don’t have the energy or desire to work as much as I use to.

So, if you’ve ever wanted to see me out of my comfort zone, well I’m there. Money I know I can make again, but it just means that I can't afford to travel and my own house buying plans are on hold. It's going to be hard to start again.
Mum doesn't know yet, I'll wait till the cheque clears before I tell her - That will be a good day.

hmm... no real relevance... but i've got the Lionel Richie "Penny Lover" track playing in the background... haha, so I guess it's a little coincidental when i read the "penny to my name" comment.

Anyway, I think I've already told you how I think your psycho motivated, good daughter etc... So yeah... heads up, I'm sure your mum (when she finds out) will be the proudest Asian parent at yumcha every Sunday from now on! Not that she isn't already.

Your parents are so lucky to have you Emily! That was a very selfless decision you made, and I don't know what I would do if I was in your situation. :)

oh wow, Em, that's amazing!! I'm so impressed. My parents don't have a mortgage but I'm planning to send them on an African safari when I get the chance.

And NO, not because I hope that my mother will get eaten by a wayward lion.

Good for you for giving your parents boasting rights from here until eternity =)

Thanks guys I think that you all have given me too much credit. I'm sure many of you would have done the same if you were in my shoes.

I guess I couldn't go on planning my own life when my parents still had this huge debt that would take them another 4 years to pay off when I could settle it right here and now. I know this means that I will be living at home longer than I had expected, but if that's the worst thing...then I really have it quite good.

I'm sure that in a few days/weeks? I'll shake off that nervous feeling and start feeling really good about everything. Thanks again for the words of encouragement.

that is a very selfless thing to do. Very inspiring actually. my mum actually has this picture over our tv which I am forced to look at everyday which has the following pics: firstly, of a mother pushing a pram with a baby in it, then the baby all grown up pushing the mother in a wheelchair. it just reminds me of what you did.

All I can say is WOW!!!

The feeling and tears you will have when u see ur mum's face will override any anxiety that you may have now.

Your parents are great...and the acknowledgment you are making of the sacrifices they have made over the years is wonderful....have ur camera ready....I wanna see your mum's face when u tell her!!!!

Good on You Ems!!! xoxo

Hey Emily, Masaki here, a friend of Hoi's, couldn't help but to stop by since I was at his site earlier and just say I totally admire what you did. That's really touching, your mom is going to be the luckiest mother ever when she finds that out.
