Good Food & Wine show 2006

Today Jacky and I headed to the Good Food & Wine show at Darling Harbour and had a deliciously good time!

Our first stop was Donna Hay's 5 10-minutes dinners, I chose this show because I subscribe to the Donna Hay magazine. With my busy schedule learning how to make quick and easy dinners is exactly what I needed! We had some pretty good seats sitting 8 rows from the front smack bang in the middle.
After the show I renewed my subscription for another 2 years (at 50% off, bargain!) and had Donna sign the cookbook that came in the showbag. I also just wanted to point out Donna's massive diamond ring, when the camera man zoomed in on it she exclaimed "I deserve my bling bling...why? because my husband comes home to dinner ready on the table!". I think there were a lot of women in the room wondering where their bling bling was.

A bouquet of flowers was so the 90’s, how about a bouquet of fruit or chocolate or cookies instead? =P

Then there was the taste testing (a lot of it!), if yogurt, frappes and chocolate dipped strawberries wasn't your thing then you could always go for a jar of snails.

Some one asked me for my 'I Love Food' bag whilst I stood here sampling some Kan Tong wok star green curry, who does that??

If you haven't been it's not too late, the show ends tomorrow (if you love food you'll enjoy this show) so make sure you go!

Go You Good Thing!

What a way to start the morning!

It was one of those games that had your heart racing till the very end. I tend not to watch sports, not because I don’t enjoy watching it but because I get so into it that I will literally have mini heart attack right on the spot.

My mum is the same; it’s so funny watching this usually quiet and timid lady shout abuse at the TV. My sister who watches every sport under the sun was soon to discover how annoying it was to watch a game with us. She amused herself by watching the way that we would strangely contort our bodies as the tension built.

My work even went as far as to invite staff and their partners to watch the game on our big screen TV. A full hot breakfast would be provided and the company would subsidise up to $20 for a cab for anyone arriving before 6:00am.

Can’t wait till next Tuesday!

Happy 8 years!

Year One June 98- June 99
When you first meet someone it’s always an exciting time it took over 6 months of talking over the phone and internet before Jacky and I finally went on our first date. Looking back, as exciting as it was year 1 wasn’t easy. I had to keep it a secret from mum because she thought I was too young to date, and Jacky’s mum – well let’s just say that I wasn’t her favourite person. When I think back to this year I remember studying at the State Library, Bailey’s and milk, #Belair, the bracelet and falling in love.

Year Two June 99 – June 00
My year 12 formal, Jacky cutting his hair really short, Schoolies, the Olympics and Brisbane.

This was also the year that the Olympic Games came to Sydney. Mum made the dress that Olivia Newton John wore at the opening ceremony and Jacky and I bought tickets to watch the basketball. Homebush is a part of history and so are we, in the heart of Sydney Olympic Park is a place called Fig Grove where you will see a foot path made of individual red bricks. On these bricks are either the names of the athletes or messages. As a gift, Jacky bought me one of these bricks and cemented in our brick is the message Jacky Loves Emily 4 Eva. If you are ever in Homebush go have a look.

Year Three June 00 – June 01
For our one year anniversary Jacky bought me a gold diamond eternity band, about another year later I dropped the ring into the car’s air conditioning vent – I was devastated and I never expected to see the ring again especially when the car was later sold. It was somewhere in between that Jacky had the car taken apart without my knowledge, he kept it a secret for a long time. On our 3 year anniversary I received a little box and inside was my ring, you can only imagine how happy and how special I felt.

Year Four June 01 – June 02
Work, study, work, study, work! That pretty much summarised our year. At some point we decided that we wanted to travel the world and to do so comfortably we needed no less than $10,000 we gave ourselves 12 months to save. We worked our bums off!! With up to 4 jobs at any one time whilst still studying fulltime.

The job that I remember the most would be working at the Royal Easter Show. Jacky was a runner moving boxes and topping up stands with show bags whilst I worked at the big Candy World stand wearing a M&M jumper selling show bags to screaming kids. The hours were long (7:00am to 10:00pm) with 15 hr days for 2 weeks straight! Jacky would come home all sunburnt and I battled with blisters from standing for so long.

Year Five June 02 – June 03
I’d have to say that this was one of the happiest and most fulfilling period of time in our lives. After a lot of hard work and planning Jacky and I saved enough money to go on our First world trip together. In a 3 month period we went to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Toronto, Ottawa, New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, China, Bangkok and Pattaya.

Travelling can get stressful especially when we leave our comfort zone to explore the unknown. We were tired, broke and had to carry around 3 months worth of luggage on our backs. This trip really allowed us to test how we interacted as a couple and surprisingly we passed with flying colours.

One of the coolest things happened during our stay in Vegas, the reception lady at the Aladdin Hotel thought that Jacky and I were honeymooners (because we were wearing matching rings at the time) she upgraded our room for the cheapest one to the second most expensive! For uni students who had no money – this felt like some one had just handed us a million dollar cheque, the lady’s name was Jill and her simple act of kindness I will remember for a life time.

Travelling opened our eyes to a whole new world; it was especially rewarding because we worked so hard and long to get there. It was in the middle of Time Square on New Years Eve at the stroke of midnight that I was so overwhelmed with emotion that I stood there and cried and cried and cried (bawling my eyes out for no particular reason); Jacky stood there with me just holding my hand.

Year Six June 03 –June 04
Graduation, full time work and Melbourne for the first time.

Year Seven June 04 – June 05
The year of our second big trip where we were suppose to go to Japan (Tokyo), Hong Kong, China, Bangkok, Malaysia, Phuket. We made it as far as China before the rest of the trip was cancelled due to the Tsunami.
Japan was excellent and by going there we finally fulfilled a life long dream (every Chinese person wants to see Japan at some stage!). Later in the same year we took my family for a driving holiday along Great Ocean Rd. The scenery was stunning and it was very reassuring to see how well Jacky got along with my family.
Reaching year 7 was a great feeling, we had dinner with our friends to celebrate, they even bought us a cake!

Year Eight June 05 – June 06
This has been without doubt the best year for us. Changes have happened very quickly and I think our relationship has reached another level. It’s also been a year of commitment, it’s one thing knowing that we’d probably spend the rest of our lives together but it’s another when you actually take steps to lock it in. We’re ecstatic about our new house and the whole process of building a home (from finding the place to fitting it out) is indescribable. Every hurdle that comes our way we tackle together, my weaknesses are his strengths and together we are an unbeatable force that always accomplishes what we set out to do.

Wishing you a very Happy Birthday and Anniversary.
Love you!

(I couldn't decide what cake to buy you...so I bought you many!)

Sunday Morning - Roula's Kitchen Tea

"What's a Kitchen Tea?" I asked one of my friends "Like a bridal shower/champagne breakfast but you bring a gift for the kitchen".

My Friend Roula who I have known for 20 years is getting married and on Sunday her sister + family + friends (it really was a team effort) threw her a Kitchen Tea. I expected that it would be a small party with 20 or so people, some sausage rolls and bacons and eggs...I couldn't have been more wrong!

When I arrived at Vivian's house my jaw just dropped!! The whole double garage had been transformed, colour spilled from every corner and balloons flooded the ceiling. The detail was amazing! from the personalised lollies to the carefully folded napkins that looked like cocktail glasses (the amount of time that all this must have taken).

And then I spotted the food....

The entree platters, the fruit punch
Oh, did I mention the fruit and cake for the TWO chocolate fountains?!?

(white chocolate & milk)

Then came the lunch, I kept thinking that I took heaps of photos of the food but looking at the photos now there was so much more than what you see here...I must have been eating.
There were a lot of games and everyone had a great laugh! the champagne glasses with the floating strawberry was a big hit.

Then came "Pin the Macho on the Man" poor Anderee had his head superimposed on a poster of a semi-naked man (I'm sure you know how this game is played). Roula seemed to have a funny idea of where Anderees "macho" went (she pinned it on his belly button).

Then there was dessert....

I had to rush off just after 1 but I had the most awesome time and I was sad to leave so soon (I had no idea it'd be such a big day!). The wedding is next month and I'm so excited! She is going to look absolutely stunning!

Sunday Afternoon - High Tea at the Swiss Hotel

After such an impressive Kitchen Tea at Roula's it's pretty hard to give a fair review for anywhere else. I think on any other day I would have been very impressed with the selection of sandwiches and desserts on offer; but on this day my heart just wasn't in it. Instead, I enjoyed the company of 21 other foodies, it was a great opportunity to meet some new friends.

I've never been to a high tea and I didn't know quite what to expect, but when Helen mentioned buffet I just assumed that there would be a plethora of food (more like a lunch). Don't get me wrong, there is plenty to choose from but it really is an afternoon tea where there are a few finger sandwiches to choose from and a lot of sweets. Even with such a big dessert selection one can only consume that much sugar.
The tea goes for 2 hours from 2pm to 4pm at a cost of $25 per person. I’d definitely come again on a day when I am not so full, it's a nice and relaxing place for friends to catch up (especially when you have a sugar craving).
A big thank you to Helen for organising, the day was great and it was lovely meeting everyone!

Friday Night Triva - "Hands for Maz"

The sister of one of the girls that I work with is battling cancer, it's been extra hard on everyone because she is the mother of 2 very young kids. To show our support we participated in a fundraising Trivia night held at St Patricks Sutherland. The turnout was massive with over 200 people turning up. I think that a lot of money was raised, a soccerball with the sigantures of all the Soccerroos sold for $1500 (if only I had money) it was really great to see a community pull together like that.

We thought that we were pretty good with trivia but the questions were hard (unless you were a child of the 50's!). In the end Jacky and I conceded that we are pretty crap at Trivia and if it wasn't for my team we would have easily come last.

Sex And The City Trivia night

Our Company donates a fair bit of money to various charities, one of these being the Breast Cancer Foundation. To be honest we're not sure how the invite came to us in HR...but you can guarantee that we're never one to refuse free drinks (even if it's on a Wednesday night).
The 6 of us who went, expected a low key trivia night (a warm up for Friday) but we had no idea that it would be such a fancy do. The theme was 'Sex And The City' and we were told to just wear pink. It turned out to be GREAT night!
There were unlimited cosmopolitans, wine, champers and finger cocktails

The waiters were all models with perfect skins, perfect hair and muscles that bulged from their tight pink shirts (it was as if these guys were plucked straight out of the show). As gorgeous as they were, we all agreed that we could never be attracted to a man who was more ‘pretty’ than us (this was metro gone wrong).

Wearing pink =P
Some guy from 9 to 5 magazine took a picture of us

There was heaps of sushi & oysters (we had cleared the lot when I took this picture). The second picture is of the chef who cooked fresh scallops for us as we waited.

There was an awesome live jazz band and Woody won a weekend away! (we told her that she had to take all of us).
Yay! We even left with show bags that had vouchers, nad's, shampoo and heaps of freebies.

Support a good cause and buy your pink ribbons!
